Captain Anant Ram
Captain Anant Ram

Born on 19th October, 1932 in Behran (Jhandutta), Mr. Anant Ram has not onlyCaptain Anant Ram brought forward Bilaspur on that horizon, which requires great effort and hard work to achieve this place of honor. Familiarly known as Captain, Mr Anant Ram has represented India in Gymnastics in Olympics Games, held in Tokyo in 1964. He has won 30 gold medals, ten silver medals and ten bronze medals in different National and International competitions of gymnastics.  In 1947 he joined Punjab Regiment of Indian Army and got training in gymnastics in Pune. He obtained permission of his commanding officer to start gymnastics in army.

Took to Gymnastics in 1954 and represented Services the same year in the National Gymnastic Championship. Was selected to represent India in the World Olympics at MELBOURNE in 1956.

In the National Championship in 1958 Anant Ram stood first in floor  exercise andGeneral V. K. Malhotra awarded Captain Anant Ram Parallel Bars and second in Horizontal Bars and third in Roman Rings. On his all around performance he was the second best Gymnast in India in 1958. In 1959 he stood first in India by winning first place in Horizontal Bars, Parallel Bars, Roman Rings and Floor Exercises and second in Pummeled Horse and Vaulting Horse. In 1960 he attended a Gymnastic Course at Patiala under a Russian Coach. In 1961 he represented India in Gymnastic Tests against a Russian Team. Toured U.S.S.R. in 1962 with an Indian Team. Owing to the emergency could not take part in the Nationals in 1962. In 1963 & 1964 was declared Champion Gymnast in India . Represented INDIA in the World Olympics at Tokyo in 1964. It can rightly be said that Anant Ram has been responsible for the high standard of Gymnastics in the Army due to his experience and training which he has imparted to all army gymnast.

Bhim Anant Ram has given up taking part in competitions after his return from TOKYO Olympics, but will continue to train gymnasts in the Services.

Captain Anant Ram had retired from Army School of Physical Training, Pune in 1980. Mr. Anant Ram is 70 Years old now but still he is very energetic and smart. He has started to train the students of Senior Secondary School Jhandutta, free of any fee. The students are performing best in his guidance.
